JAMMU, Apr 21: Activist of Displaced Persons (DPs), Rajiv Chuni has threatened self immolation if Pakistan occupied J&K (PoJK) DPs were denied Pahari status.
Addressing a press conference here today Chuni said that J&K State Cabinet in October 2014 sent a financial package for PoJK DPs to Government of India seeking approval for implementation.
He said that the proposed package promised Rs. 25 lakh per displaced family, reservation in professional and technical colleges of the country for wards of PoJK DPs and 8,500 government jobs for educated unemployed youths of PoJK DPs.
“Modi Government sent the proposal to Parliamentary Standing Committee for review which in turn in its 183rd report recommended Rs. 30 lakh per displaced family and also endorsed other components of package recommended by J&K State Cabinet,” Chuni maintained.
He said that PM Modi on November 7, 2015 announced Rs. 80 thousand crore package for J&K and that included Rs. 2000 crore for PoJK DPs.
“When Rs. 2000 crore were released in November 2016 it was clearly mentioned that the amount should be provided to PoJK displaced families within three months but after the lapse of 6 years only half of the PoJK DPs families got this relief,” he said.
Chuni said that bureaucratic hurdle at every step has hampered the process which needs to be simplified so that the displaced families may get the relief without delay.
Commenting on a recent legislation brought in by J&K government for identifying Pahari Speaking People (PSP) in J&K, he said, “We qualify all the prerequisite conditions including clan, tribe and mother tongue, to qualify for the Pahari status. But the government is not issuing us PSP Certificate.”
“If these issues are not resolved by the end of April 2022, I’ll set myself on fire any day in May, 2022 to register protest against ongoing injustice with my community,” threatened Chuni.
