NEW DELHI : Coming down heavily on the government, the BJD today said incidents like Delhi church fire creates an atmosphere of insecurity among minorities. Speaking during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, BJD member Dilip Tirkey said, “The Dishad Garden Church burning incident is not a mishap but has been done purposely. These incidents have happened in Odisha as well. This is creating a sense of insecurity amongst Christians.” Trinamool Congress member Derek O’Brien demanded a statement from Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the issue. “Kerosene was thrown in four corners of the church and put on fire. This is not just in Delhi, it has happened else where as well. The minorities are being targeted. I hope the Home Minister also gives a statement on this as well,” he said.
St Sebastian’s Church in Dilshad Garden was gutted in a fire on December 1, leading to protests and sit-ins by Christians and their supporters asking for a detailed probe into the matter.
The Home Minister, yesterday, said in the Lok Sabha, “Government will not tolerate any attempt to disturb the communal harmony in the country.”
He said he took immediate steps after receiving the information related to the alleged attack on the church and spoke to Delhi LG Najeeb Jung and ordered a probe into the matter. A SIT has also been constituted to probe the attack. (AGENCIES)
