Srinagar, June 19: Intense clashes broke out between students and police in Main Town of Ganderbal district today during which a cop was injured while situation elsewhere was normal.
The students of Degree College Ganderbal today assembled outside their college and started sloganeering. They also burst some firecrackers and then pelted stones on police at Dudherhama in the town. A police official said that the students resorted to heavy stone-pelting and also forced shopkeepers to down their shutters.
Witnesses said police resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the students and restore the order but the latter continued pelting stones from various sides. A police constable identified as Gulzar Ahmad Magray was injured after he was hit by a stone during clashes. Police while chasing stone-throwing students detained more than a dozen among them. Later the situation normalized but additional police personnel were deployed in the Main Town.
Meanwhile, situation across Valley remained peaceful today after last night’s violence. A police official said: “there was no incident of violence today except for Ganderbal and the day passed off peacefully. Last night, the crowds burst crackers and pelted stones on security forces in all districts but there was no fatality.” In South Kashmir, the life returned to normal after days of shutdown and violence. However, shutdown continued in small pockets of Pampore and Kulgam.
With the improvement in situation, the high speed mobile Internet data service that was snapped by authorities following militant and civilian killings in South Kashmir was restored on all networks today evening.
