JAMMU, July 3: Alleging failure of Government to protect workers/labourers hailing from other States and presently working in Kashmir, Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) demanded proper safety of such workers and also release pending wages of MGNREGA workers in J&K.
Talking to media persons here today, president of the organization, Shashi Kumar Sayal alleged that many workers from different States have been killed by militants in Kashmir during past several years but the present regime has failed to protect these workers hailing from outside J&K. He said many of them are working in the apple, cherry and other orchards and others doing farming activity and also engaged in labour/mason work at road and building projects. He demanded that LG administration and BJP Govt must ensure protection to these workers.
Sayal further demanded that MGNREGA workers should be paid their pending wages by the RDD authorities in J&K. Despite Government assurance they are not getting 100 days work now. Moreover, many contractors have remained unpaid despite completion of works since long. The remuneration of the workers is also not being paid on time.
He pointed out that the loans of the workers especially who are not alive now, should be waived off like those of farmers. Their water and electricity bills should also be exempted. He also demanded enhancement of the remuneration of MGNREGA workers.
It was disclosed that top leaders of INTUC (Fed) from the Central body are visiting J&K shortly and they shall address the working class members here.
