Orders of Prasar Bharti to close down Yuva-vani service of Radio Jammu from June 1, 2014 have stirred a wave of shock and resentment among the artists, intelligentsia, youth and political groups in Jammu. It is intriguing that the service started way back in 1974 had become very popular with the people especially the youth and it was expected that the service would be further streamlined with the passage of time. But contrary to expectations, a platform that was highly appreciated as giving opportunity to budding talent to flower and contribute to the cultural fund of Duggar land is sought to be sabotaged. The reckless order issued by an out-going Government at the fag end of its tenure is very intriguing. Jammu intelligentsia is up in arms and threatens to launch strong protest against an order that goes against the interests of cultural life of Jammu. Prasar Bharti has not given any reason for this retrograde order and has left stakeholders guessing whether it is political vendetta or mere whims and aberrations at higher levels of administration. Similar order has also been served on Radio Kashmir Srinagar and it has evoked similar resentful sentiments there also.
We exhort the Ministry of Information, Government of India to keep the sentiments of the people especially of the youth of our State in mind, and not deprive them of a platform from which they are able to find exposure to their talent in various fields like music, song, literature, culture, history and aesthetics. It will be a disservice to the people of the region. If there is a thinking that the service could be made more effective and result oriented, that would be a welcome idea. Suggestions can be invited on how to improve the service. But to abandon it will be depriving the youth of their privileges.
