CM reviews security at Unified Hqrs meet ahead of yatra

Srinagar, June 19: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today reviewed security and law and order situation in the State at Unified Headquarters meeting ahead of Shri Amarnath Yatra that begins here later this month.
The main focus of the meeting held at the SKICC, Srinagar that began this morning, besides security and law and order situation in the State, was the security of the Amarnath Yatra that begins from June 28.
The meeting assumed significance as the yatra this year faces heightened threat after security forces received inputs that militants might target the yatra this year. Army has already launched ‘Operation Shiva’ for the security of the yatra.
The meeting besides Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand and Minister of State (MoS) for Home, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo was attended by top brass of the security forces including General Officer Commanding (GOC) Northern Command, Lt Geneneral K T Parnaik, GOC 15 Corps, Lt General Gurmeet Singh, GOC 14 Corps, Lt General Rajan Bakshi, GOC 16 Corps, Lt General D S Hooda, GOC 9 Corps, Lt General Anil Bhalla, Principal Secretary Home, Suresh Kumar, Director General of Police, Ashok Prasad, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, BB Vyas, Divisional Commissioners, Kashmir and Jammu, Special Director General CRPF, IGP CID J&K, IGP Kashmir, IGP Jammu, IG CRPF, Joint Director IB, IG BSF Jammu, IG CRPF Jammu, IG Operation CRPF Kashmir, Commissioner SB Jammu and Media Advisor Bharti Vaid.
The Chief Minister was briefed about the security arrangements for the smooth and peaceful conduct of Amarnath Yatra. The security top brass briefed the meeting about the security arrangements for the yatra in the wake of militant threats.
It may be mentioned here that for the safety and security of the yatra, State Government issued Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Amarnath Yatra-2013 as per the Supreme Court guidelines.
After threats Home Department has declared entire yatra route as terror prone. Army has already launched operation Shiva for the security of Amarnath Yatra this year in view of militant threats.
The meeting also discussed the infiltration attempts along the Line of Control (LoC) by militants in the State. The Chief Minister was informed that the militants are desperate to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir to fill the void created due to successful operations in Kashmir valley over the years.
The Army top brass also informed the meeting about the counter-infiltration measures that have been put in place along the LoC to stop militants from infiltrating. The meeting was also told that the pressure maintained on the militants in the hinterland has been also been effective in countering the infiltration.
The meeting also discussed militancy in Kashmir valley and the operations conducted by the security forces to counter it especially in the wake of local youth joining the militancy. It may be mentioned here that the local youth joining the militancy is a major concern for the security agencies.
The meeting also discussed the law and order situation in Kashmir valley and measures taken by the security agencies especially police to prevent any law and order problem during the Amarnath Yatra and tourist season.
