SRINAGAR, Nov 8: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, leader of the house in the Assembly, today urged the Speaker to grant additional time to first-time legislators speaking on the motion to thank the Lieutenant Governor for his address.
Omar stood up when the Speaker instructed MLA Doda, Mehraj Malik, to sit down after his allotted time had ended, requesting that the Speaker allow such members extra time to speak.
He pointed out the empty opposition benches, suggesting that the available time could be used by leaders present in the House, allowing new members to participate more fully in parliamentary proceedings and voice their perspectives.
“The benches in front of us are empty, and we can make use of their time, allowing the newcomers to speak for a bit longer,” Omar said.
In response, Malik expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister, stating that he has come to the House to raise issues of public importance. “I thank you for the gesture; we are new here and will learn the rules over time,” he said.
Notably, out of 90 members, around 53 have been elected for the first time. At the end of the day, the Speaker also announced that a workshop will be held to train the legislators.
“I will consult with the Lok Sabha Secretariat in this regard. I have attended such workshops and conventions, and they really help in understanding the workings and functioning of the House,” the Speaker said.
