JAMMU, Feb 1: Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu organized a CME on Coronavirus today.
The CME was aimed at creating awareness on globally declared threat in the form of novel coronavirus, which has till date claimed 259 lives and infected nearly 12,000 people in neighbouring country, China.
Principal, GMC Jammu, Dr Sunanda Raina inaugurated the CME, which was attended by medical superintendents of GMC Jammu and associated hospitals, faculty members and PG students.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shashi Sharma, HoD, Microbiology, said that the World Health Organisation has declared the outbreak a global emergency on Thursday. She said that according to a study by University of Hong Kong scientists, as many as 75,815 people in Wuhan may have been infected with the new coronavirus as each infected person could have passed the virus on to others.
Briefing about the precautions to be taken by the doctors and other medical staff dealing with suspected coronavirus patients, Dr Shashi stressed on doffing and donning of personal protective equipment. She said that every suspected patient should be isolate and his/her movement should be limited.
She said that the doctor treating such patients should disinfect shared equipment between patient use and wash hands with soaps properly after patient contact.
