JAMMU, Mar 2: Continuing its drive against tax evasion of GST in the State, the anti-evasion sleuths of Central GST Commissionerate, Jammu, have detected an evasion of GST to the tune of approximately Rs 3.10 crores by prominent coaching institutes of J&K.
Earlier this month, a tax evasion of more than Rs 2 crores was detected in Hotels and marriage banquet halls. Thus total evasion of GST detected by the Central GST Commissionerate in the State has crossed Rs 5 crores so far.
On the basis of credible information collected and on the directions of Commissioner of Central Tax Gyan Sarvar and under the supervision of Additional Commissioner of Central Tax, C L Dogra, the Anti-Evasion officers of Central GST, led by Assistant Commissioner (Anti-Evasion) Iftikhar Ahmed Chowdhary, conducted search operations simultaneously at 10 premises of prominent coaching institutes at various locations in the State. During the operations, large scale evasion by under-reporting of revenues and non-payment of tax was detected. These coaching centres were found collecting GST from students but not depositing the same with Government exchequer.
The coaching institutes have been booked for evasion of GST to the tune of approximately Rs 3.10 crores. The institutes were found not showing their earning, a large portion of the fee collected, in the financial records. The officers found several incriminating documents and computerised data indicating the pattern and extent of tax evasion.
Due to the meticulous operations by the officers, the firms had no choice and admitted to wrongdoing with an intention to evade taxes and are depositing the amounts due to the Government at once.
Appealing to prospective tax payers, Commissioner Gyan Sarvar said that the business establishments covered under GST should voluntarily get themselves registered and pay due tax to avoid penal provisions.
