Cold revisits Kashmir, mercury falls due to rain

SRINAGAR : Woolen and warm clothes are out again in  Kashmir as cold revisited the valley, following fresh rain since early this morning, resulting in drop in the mercury.   A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers would occur at most places of Kashmir and Jammu divisions and at a few places in Ladakh region during the next 24 hours.
He said during the next four days, there would be decrease in precipitation.  After witnessing yet another normal or above normal minimum temperature, people woke up to a rainy morning with sky under dark clouds in the valley, including summer capital Srinagar, where several low laying localities remained inundated for the past about one month.
Though the sky remained under clouds, but there was some improvement in the weather this afternoon.    The spokesman said the minimum temperature witnessed further increase  and settled at 11.6 degree Celsius, about three notches above normal. However, maximum temperature yesterday remained one degree below normal, he said, adding that it was up by seven notches against the mximum on April 28.
Though the water level in river Jehlum was several feet blow normal, but people in the city were worried as it will increase further due to fresh rain, particularly in south Kashmir.  The spokesman said the minimum temperature will remain above normal, but the maximum will drop again in the city during the next 24 hours, when moderate rain or thundershowers  occur.
People in the city were seen wearing woollen clothes again due to chilly weather conditions since early this morning. Rain and chill has badly affected vegetables and flowers.
There was considerable improvement in minimum temperature at the valley, including the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where against 1.5 degrees recorded yesterday, it was 3.5 degrees, today half a notch below normal. At famed health resort of Pahalgam, the minimum temperature settled at 6 degrees, two notches above normal. It was 1.7 degrees yesterday, he said, adding that could revisit the resort with traces of rain during the night. Rainfall lashed the resort this morning also.
Qazigund,gatway of Kashmir, recorded 9.2 degrees about four degree more than yesterday, while it was 7.8 degrees at Kokernag, a notch above yesterday’s, despite recording seven mm rainfall during the night.  Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded 9.7 degrees, about two notches above normal, he said, adding that the frontier district recorded 1.6 mm rainfall during the night. Leh recorded increase in the minimum temperature from 0.5 degree yesterday to 2.2 degree today, while it dropped by a notch at Kargil, a border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway, which is closed since December last year. He said at Kargil, it was 2.4 degrees against yesterday’s 3.8 degrees.
He said there could be light rain in Leh and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 15 degree and 4 degrees respectively.
