SRINAGAR, Dec 19: Srinagar witnessed coldest night of the season with the minimum temperature settling at minus 4.4 degrees as the cold wave tightened its grip in the Valley where mercury slipped below the freezing point.
The night temperature in Srinagar dipped further by over a degree from the previous night’s minus 3.2 degree Celsius and settled at a low of minus 4.4 degree Celsius. The season’s coldest night caused the fringes of famous Dal lake to freeze.
However, people had a sigh of relief as Sun came out in the morning and temperature rose up and settled at 8.4 degree Celsius.
The mercury in Qazigund also went down from the previous night’s low of minus 3.3 degree Celsius to settle at a low of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius. The day temperature settled at 7.9 degree Celsius.
Pahalgam registered a low of minus 7.9 degrees Celsius compared to the previous night’s minus 7.7 degree Celsius. The day temperature of the place settled at 6.3 degree Celsius.
The temperature in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district also went down by nearly a degree to settle at a low of minus 4.6 degree Celsius, while Kokernag town in South Kashmir registered a minimum temperature of minus 3.1 degree Celsius. The day temperature at Kupwara settled at 9 degree Celsius and Kokernag at 6.6 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 10.5 degrees Celsius. The resort had registered a low of minus 10.4 degree Celsius the previous night and the day temperature settled at minus 0.2 degree Celsius.
Leh, also witnessed a slight decrease in the night temperature as the mercury there settled at minus 13.7 degree Celsius compared to the previous night’s minus 12.9 degrees Celsius. Leh was the coldest place in the State. The day temperature settled at 1.8 degree Celsius.
The temperature in Kargil town dropped nearly three degrees as the mercury there recorded a low of minus 10.2 degree Celsius against the previous night’s minus 7.4 degree Celsius. The day temperature settled at minus 1.2 degree Celsius.
The Meteorological Department has predicted mainly dry weather over the next few days in the State during which night temperature will plummet further.
