Come up with traffic management plan within 2 days: Altaf

SRINAGAR, Apr 18: Minister for Public Works, Floriculture and Gardens & Parks Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari today underlined the need for initiating tangible measures to streamline the traffic management and road safety in Srinagar city. He also called for effective monitoring and supervision by the concerned authorities to ensure hassle-free travel by commuters.
Bukhari was addressing a high level meeting here today to review traffic management in Srinagar.
The Minister directed the officers of Public Works, Traffic Department, SMC, SDA and Town Planning Organisation Kashmir to conduct comprehensive survey of the city and come up with tangible measures for better traffic management and regulation in the summer capital. He said to streamline traffic flow some of the routes passing through the city centre may be declared one way for the vehicular movement.
The Minister said in view of the growing population and ever increasing flow of vehicular traffic, responsibilities of traffic police have doubled and the department needs to come upto the demands of time. He directed IGP Kashmir to extend all help to the Traffic Department for better traffic management in the city.
He observed that awareness among road users about road safety and traffic rules needs to be given utmost importance besides seeking cooperation of people in bringing improvement in traffic management and penalizing the violators. Bukhari said that all stakeholders need to be taken into confidence in order to achieve desired results.
Bukhari asked all the departments concerned with the traffic management for coordination with other field agencies in order to facilitate smooth traffic movement throughout the city. He said that the Government is aware of the problems faced by the Traffic Department in performing their duties on the roads, exposed to extreme weather conditions.
Expressing serious concern over road mishaps, Bukhari said that good road geometry, adherence to traffic rules and removal of road blockades could make the roads safer.
The meeting was attended by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Gazzanfar Hussain, IGP Kashmir Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gillani, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Lone, Chief Engineer R&B S K Razdan, VC Srinagar Development Authority (SDA) Saleem Ahmad, RTO Kashmir Mehmood, DIG Central Kashmir Ghulam Hassan Bhat, DIG Traffic Alok, SSP Srinagar Amit Kumar, Joint Commissioner Planning SMC Mushtaq Ahmad, Chief Sanitation  Officer SMC  Manzoor Ahmad senior officers of various departments and members of the Civil Society.
