Companies hold up airspace by not operationalising TV channels: Govt

NEW DELHI, Aug 8:
A large number of private satellite TV channels have been violating the licensing norms with many of them holding up the precious air space by not going into opperation despite obtaining permission for launching their channels, the Lok
Sabha was informed today.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said in a written reply that six companies had changed their board of directors without prior approval of the Ministry and a showcause notice had been issued to them.
Besides 15 companies had effected change in their shareholding pattern in violation of the uplinking guidelines.
The Ministry informed 11 companies of the permission given to them for starting one channel each but they did not respond, thus causing delay in allotment of the precious space to other aspirants, he said.
These companies have been issued showcause notices and permission
of one of them had been cancelled, Mr Tewari said.
He said the Ministry has so far cancelled permission for 71 channels on the ground that the companies concerned failed to operationalise these channels, or did not submit Performance Bank Guarantee or did not surrender their permission following their failure to begin operations. (UNI)
