Compensate paddy farmers for damaged crop: Chib

JAMMU, Jan 29: District Congress Committee, Jammu Rural president, Hari Singh Chib today urged the Government to provide adequate compensation to paddy growing farmers of Jammu border belt for damage caused to their crop due to inclement weather in Jammu region.
Interacting with farmers during visit to border villages at Arnia and Suchetgarh in RS Pura Tehsil, Chib said that the farming community in these area had faced unfavourable climatic conditions of rain and hail-storm and their crop got ruined. He expressed resentment against the Government for not showing its serious concern towards the plights of the farmers.
Chib demanded that an empowered team of Revenue and Agriculture officers must carry out survey at ground zero to assess the situation and damage caused in these areas. He said that the actual damages can be ascertained only after thorough survey is carried out in the affected areas. He hoped that the Government will rise to the occasion and come to rescue of farming community.
DCC chief further demanded that interim relief should be provided to all, adding that the affected farmers should also be provided inputs for the next crop season liberally.
Chib said there is resentment among farmers because they have been ignored by the Government. He said that BJP Government has no concern for the farmers and the same is clear from the fact that despite repeated representations, no effective steps have been ever taken to resolve the problems of the farmers.
Congress leader appealed to the Lieutenant Governor, GC Murmu to provide at least Rs 3000 per Kanal to the farmers so that they may get a sigh of relief. He also appealed to the Lt Governor to waive off the power and electricity bills of border dwellers who are already facing the brunt of cross border firing.
