In August, 2013, riots had taken place in Kishtwar town in which mobs unleashed loot and arson. Infuriated mobs with surcharged communal sensitivities turned blind to the communal harmony that used to be there among the communities in Kishtwar and indulged in ugly attacks and loot. The authorities swung into action and in due course of time situation was brought under control. Inquiries conducted into the happening revealed that large scale damages were caused to the property and shops of some of the citizens as these were looted in broad day light. The Government promised to compensate the losses but what actually was sanctioned was only the peanuts not even a fraction of actual losses suffered. The victims who are petty and medium level shopkeepers cannot restart their business with the paltry compensation given to them.
MPs from Jammu region have fervently taken up their case with the Union Home Minister and presented him all relevant documents and proofs of the losses suffered by the victims of Kishtwar and has emphasized that they should be adequately compensated. It is his constituency and he has full knowledge of all the aspects of the case. Actually, the State Government should have come forward to make good the loss in full. We are sanguine that the Union Home Minister understands the entire background of the riots and does full justice to the victims who want to stand on their own legs.
