Concerns over ULB term expiration

Sir,
I write to express my deep concern regarding the recent announcement by the Law Department of the Union Territory Government, stating that the term of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) members and the duration of Municipal Corporations, Councils, and Committees will expire after five years from the date of their first meeting. While this decision adheres to the legal framework, it raises significant issues in the context of the delayed elections for ULBs and Panchayats.
The delay in conducting these elections, primarily due to the reservation process and discrepancies in the electorate numbers, has now resulted in the sudden termination of elected representatives’ tenures. This has left several ULBs without functioning elected bodies, jeopardizing the local governance system.
I urge the authorities to prioritize the timely conduct of these elections to ensure the continuity of democratic representation in our urban areas. The sudden vacuum in local governance is a matter of concern, and citizens deserve better planning and execution to avoid such disruptions.
