Conduct of BDC polls cruel joke with J&K people: MPEJ

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 1: Describing the conduct of Block Development Council (BDC) elections without implementation of 73rd amendment as murder of democracy and democratic institutions, the Movement for Peace, Equality and Justice (MPEJ) has termed it as `cruel joke’ with the people of J&K.
The members of Movement for Peace, Equality & Justice, in a press statement here said that the conduct of BDC elections without implementation of 73rd amendment in J&K, will be the murder of the democratic institutions and joke with the people of State. They said that Congress, NC, PDP & BJP have disillusioned the Panchayat & BDC polls for their personal interests. The Governor’s Administration is also not interested to implement the 73rd amendment of Indian constitution in Jammu & Kashmir.
They said the successive Governments were not sincere in decentralization of power to the hands of public representatives up to Panchayat level in a democratic way through democratic process and have destroyed the basic concept of Panchayati Raj in the State and made it a toothless tiger by making so many amendments by misusing of the Art. 370 and this should not be repeated in any case in President’s rule at least after abrogation of Art 370, if the Central Government and the Governor really want to give justice to the past deceived people of the state. Now, the people of the state should not be deprived of the benefits of 73rd amendment of Panchati Raj Act.
And now after abrogation of Art 370, it was the golden opportunity before the public to elect honest men/women without the consideration of party politics but the present Governor administration is conducting BDC elections in J&K in hush-hush manner and that also on party basis before October 31 so that the 73rd amendment is not implemented in J&K. The members appealed to the Sarpanchs and Panchs to elect only the honest and the competent men/women at all costs if the BDC elections.
