JAMMU, Nov 18: The three- day National Conference on Fungal Biology: Recent Trends and Future Prospects & 44th Annual Meeting of Mycological Society of India, organized by the Department of Botany, University of Jammu, concluded here today.
In the valedictory function, Prof T N Lakhanpal, one of the renowned Mycologists of the country and Prof Emeritus, was the chief guest while Prof Keshav Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs JU, was the guest of honour. Prof N S Atri, Chief Editor Kavaka Journal and Prof N. Raaman, Secretary, MSI, represented the Mycological Society of India.
In his address, Prof Lakhanpal spoke at length about the present status of Indian Mycology and impressed upon the young researchers to take a lead from the experienced and accomplished senior mycologists to compete at the global platform.
Prof Keshav Sharma mentioned about the experience of dealing with mushrooms and MFPs as a marketing expert and quoted several historical events based on the utility of fungi especially mushrooms.
Prof N. Raaman, Secretary of the MSI, who has been instrumental in getting the MSI to the State of Jammu and Kashmir for the first ever time since its inception 44 years ago, also spoke on the occasion.
Giving details of the conference, Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Head Department of Botany and the Organizing Secretary of the conference, informed that more than 180 delegates from all across the country participated in the conference. A total of 19 lead lectures by eminent Mycologists, 54 oral presentations and 72 poster presentations were made during the three- day proceedings.
Earlier, Prof Geeta Sumbali, Dean Life Sciences and Convenor of the Conference, presented welcome address while C Manoharachary from Osmania University, Hyderabad, was conferred upon Lifetime Achievement Award. Prof K Natarajan Memorial Award was presented to Prof Krishnendu Acharaya from University of Calcutta while Dr V Agnihothrudu Memorial Award and Dr S K Shome Memorial Award were presented to Prof M Krishna Mohan from BISR, Jaipur and Dr Dilip V Hande from Amravati respectively. The M J Thirumalachar Award of MSI for best poster and oral presentation and six other awards for best oral and poster presentations were presented to the winners by the dignitaries.
