KATHUA, Nov 28: A two-day National Conference on Population, Resources and Development, inaugurated yesterday at Government Degree College Kathua by the chief guest, Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, VC, University of Jammu, concluded today.
The conference began with the lightening of traditional lamp by the dignitaries and a welcome address by Prof Nater Singh Principal, GDC Kathua. The Principal deliberated upon theories regarding relationship between population and development and emphasized on sustainable use of resources.
The key note address was read out by Prof Harjit Singh, from Jawhar Lal Nehru University. Prof Singh emphasized on Environment-Development debate, which he argued, is among the most important issues in the 21st century and that degradation of land is a major challenge for survival of mankind in the second half of the present century.
On the occasion, the Journal of Biosphere, was released by the dignitaries. Vote of Thanks was presented by Dr CP Sharma, Associate Professor. Other present on the occasion were Prof VS Manhas of Department of Geography, University of Jammu, Prof Istaq Ahmed and Prof MA Khan from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, Prof KS Sohal, from Punjabi University Patiala, Prof TA Kanth from University of Kashmir, Srinagar and AK Goel, SSP Kathua.
On the concluding day today, in the plenary session Prof KS Sohal, Department of Geography, Punjabi University, Patiala delivered a lecture on “Emergence of Wheat-Rice crop rotation and its environmental effects in Punjab”. The Session was chaired by Prof MB Magrey, Principal, GDC Thannamandi.
The valedictory function began with the welcome address by Dr Nater Singh Principal GDC Kathua. The report concerning the proceeding of the conference was read by Prof (Dr) VS Manhas, Department of Geography, University of Jammu.
Chief guest Prof Nalini Kohli appreciated Dr Nater Singh and staff members for their contribution and efforts in order to raise the academics standard of the college by organizing a national level conference. Prof Gurdyal, Head, PG Department of Geography, Govt Degree College Kathua presented the vote of thanks.
