* Indira was symbol of women empowerment: Karra

JAMMU/ SRINAGAR, Nov 19: Congress today organized several functions to remember the first woman Prime Minister of the country Indira Gandhi while the main function was held in Jammu under the leadership of PCC president, Tariq Hameed Karra which was attended by senior leaders of the party.
Rich tribute were paid to Late Gandhi by the speakers in a function at the party office Shaheedi Chowk, Jammu while earlier floral tribute were paid to former Prime Minister at her statue at Indira Chowk, Jammu in a simple function organized by Congress Seva Dal and attended by several senior leaders along with the PCC president including Tara Chand, Raman Bhalla, Mula Ram, Ravinder Sharma, Yogesh Sawhney, Ved Mahajan, Jahangir Mir, Shabir Khan, Balbir Singh, Indu Pawar, Rajnish Sharma, Hari Singh Chib, Vijay Sharma (Seva Dal) and others.
Addressing the function at party office, Karra described her a strong and visionary leader who was symbol of women empowerment and strength of the country. He recalled her numerous welfare schemes for the poor and downtrodden and firm believer in unity in diversity and secularism. He recalled her contribution in the freedom struggle and great achievements as Prime Minister on all fronts.
Karra referred to her victory in Bangladesh war and the signing of historical Shimla Agreement whereby Pakistan was restrained from raising the Kashmir issue from any international forum. He said all those who believe in unity in diversity should defeat the communal and divisive forces who are posing threat to the unity and integrity of the nation for which our great leaders Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi laid down their lives.
Tara Chand and Raman Bhalla described Late Gandhi as a great visionary leader who did several remarkable achievements on different fronts including strengthening the defence of the country. She was symbol of women empowerment in the country as a result the 73rd and 74th amendments ensured 33% reservation to the women in PRIs.
Several speakers including Mula Ram, Balwan Singh, Ch Lal Singh, Jahangir Mir, Dr Manohar Lal Sharma, Yash Pal Kundal, and others recalled the great contribution of Indira Gandhi.
Sain Rashid, Shashi Sharma, Vinod Sharma, Rakesh Wazir, Gurdarshan Singh, Narinder Sharma, Subash Bhagat, Narinder Gupta, Praveen Sarwar Khan, Suresh Dogra, Ch Dwarka, Bhushan Dogra, Sanjeev Sharma (Panda), RS Jamwal, Neeraj Gupta, Kapil Singh, Sahil Sharma, Michael Wazir, Vijay Shastri, Shiv Kumar Sharma (INTUC), Ajay Lakhotra (NSUI), Jatin Raina, Rajinder Singh Nathu, Madan Lal Chalotra, Bharat Priya, Rashid Azam Inqlabi, Nasir Masih, Vijay Tagotra and others were present.
In Srinagar, JKPCC also paid floral tribute to former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi on her 107 birth anniversary and recollected her great contributions to the inclusive development of India while hailing her selfless services to the Nation.
Congress leaders and workers in a function held at Srinagar Party office to commemorate birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi paid floral tribute to former Prime Minister and saluted her bravery. They highlighted her great contributions and supreme sacrifices for the Nation saying that Late Gandhi’s leadership qualities made India self-reliant in every field making it a powerful Nation.
The speakers said the iron lady of India (Gandhi) was known for her courage and vision, she always remained at the forefront to safeguard the Nation from both external and internal threats and gave supreme sacrifices for the integrity and sovereignty of the country.
Srinagar DCC president Irfan Naqib presided over the function. Senior leaders Abdul Gani Khan, Nissar Ahmad Mundoo, Abid Imtiyaz Bhat, Shameema Raina, Umer Jaan, Mir Ruvais, Dr Audil Farooq Mir, Raja Waseem, Gh. Mohd Allai, Nargis and various others spoke on the occasion.
Similar functions were held in Rajouri, Udhampur, Kathua, Baramulla, Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam and other districts in the J&K UT.
