NEW DELHI : Cracking the whip on senior leader Barkha Singh, a day after her resignation from the party’s women’s wing and her attack on party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken, the party today expelled her from the party for six years.
A statement from the Delhi Congress said the party has decided to expel Barkha Shukla Singh from the party for six years ”for undertaking anti-party activities just before the MCD elections”. ”Disciplinary Committee of the DPCC, in its meeting dated April 21, has unanimously decided to expel Ms Barkha Singh for period of six years from the party for undertaking anti-party activities, just before the MCD elections.
A resolution to this effect has been passed,” a statement by the Delhi Congress said.
The four-member Disciplinary Committee, comprising of former Delhi Minister Narender Nath, Abha Chaudhary (former President Delhi Mahila Congress), Mahmood Zia and Congress leader Surender Kumar. Ms Singh had yesterday quit as chief of the women’s wing of the Delhi Congress. ”Congress party under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Ajay Maken have only used the issue of empowerment of women and women security to gather votes. The issue means nothing to them.” Ms Singh said. “In the current organisation, where I myself am unsafe, how will I empower women in that organisation? That is why I hereby resign from the post of President of Delhi Mahila Congress,”she said. Ms Singh is the second senior Delhi Congress leader to quit the party, ahead of MCD polls. Earlier, former Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely had quit the Congress and joined the BJP. (AGENCIES)
