JAMMU, Jan 6 : Dr B R Ambedkar was posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna in 1990, four decades after his demise. He was deprived of this highest civilian award of the country as there was Congress in power for decades together at the centre after independence.
This was stated by Balbir Ram Rattan, spokesperson, J&K BJP during a meeting held here today.
He charged Congress of intentionally ignoring the towering stature of Dr Ambedkar and not recognizing his unparalleled contribution in various fields in pre and post independence India.
“This delay raises questions about the Congress party’s commitment to honouring the nation’s icons, particularly those representing the marginalized communities,” he said adding that Dr Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a towering leader in the fight for social justice and equality, remains one of the most celebrated figures in Indian history. However, it is notable that the Indian National Congress failed to recognize his unparalleled contributions during his lifetime and even posthumously, as it did not award him the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour, during its tenure.
“While Congress did not show any concern to keep alive the life and legacy of Dr Ambedkar, the BJP has taken significant steps to honour him,” he added.
