JAMMU, Oct 10: Another milestone was achieved today by the Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu when a large hole in the heart of an 20-month-old child weighing 10 kilograms was repaired through a small cut around the lower half of right nipple (Periareolar Incision) at Government Superspeciality Hospital (SSH), Jammu.
The patient was extubated on the operation table as he became fully awake and his heart rate, blood pressure and other vital parameters became normal. The surgery was performed through Minimal Access Surgery on Beating Heart. The procedure was carried out using the same set of equipment and instruments as for conventional surgery without adding to the cost. All the expenses of consumable and other drugs used were covered under Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
This child was failing to grow for his age and had palpitations (rapid heat beats) and repeated chest infections. His heart chambers were enlarged and excessive flow of blood was going into lungs because of hole between two upper chambers of heart. His pressure in Lung arteries (Pulmonary arteries) was high.
The surgical team comprised of Dr Shyam Singh, Dr IA Mir and Dr Arvind Kohli assisted by Dr Akansha Sharma and Dr Simriti Bhat. Dr Mohit Arora, Dr Vivek Gandotra, Dr Prabhdeep Singh, Dr Javed and Dr Rouf also helped in carrying out the procedure.
The Cardiac Anaesthesia was conducted smoothly by Professor and Head Dr Puja Vimesh (Principal GMC Doda) and her team comprising Dr Rasmeet Kaur, Dr Vikas Gupta, Dr Heena, Dr Tanvi and Dr Ramnivas.
