SAMBA, Jan 22: To highlight the suffering of the farmers, district president of Congress Committee, Samba, and former Minister, Manjeet Singh led farmers organised a protest demonstration in support of their demands at Vijaypur, near here, today.
The party has criticized the Government for ignoring farmers suffering in Jammu whereas Union ministers conducting tours on already managed places.
The protesters demanded that the Government should enhance their compensation for the losses they suffered due to inclement weather conditions.
After the demonstration, the protesters led by senior Congress leader Manjit Singh handed over a memorandum to LG Girish Chander Murmu through SDM Vijaypur demanding compensation from the Government.
Earlier, addressing the protestors, Manjit Singh said that the Government has fixed Rs 675 per kanal whereas, the farmers have spent Rs 2000 per kanal after using fertilizers and other things.
“If a farmer has suffered losses on 30 to 40 kanals of land, they would not be able to get compensation because Government is not giving compensation over 20 kanals,” said Manjit Singh.
He said that Kashmir’s farmers and fruit growers were given adequate compensation, and “We have demanded that minimum compensation should be Rs 2000 to Rs 2500 per kanal to the farmers”.
They also demanded to wave off the pump charges as they were not able to use them. “For six months, ration should be given free of cost to the farmers,” he demanded while handing over memorandum to the SDM Vijaypur.
Criticizing BJP for neglecting farmers in Jammu, the former Minister said that “The visit of Union ministers to Jammu has ignored the sufferings of the farmers. BJP rules for rich people and the poor are suffering under their regime,” he added.
