BASOHLI , Oct 5: Making a scathing attack on opposition, Union Minister and Lok Sabha MP from Udhampur-Kathua-Doda, Dr Jitendra Singh accused the Congress Party of having sabotaged the 73rd and 74th amendments of Panchayat Act in order to appease their Kashmir-centric allies like National Conference, even though both these amendments had been piloted by their own Party leader and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He said, it goes to the credit of the Governor’s regime that it has responded to our long pending demand and decided to implement most of the provisions in these amendments in the State of Jammu & Kashmir, in order to ensure greater empowerment of the local bodies and Panchayats.
Addressing a meeting of BJP candidates contesting the Municipal Committee elections in Basohli, Dr Jitendra Singh said, it is an irony that Congress had been in coalition with a Party like National Conference, which sought “Autonomy” for dynasty rule but was opposed to autonomy for Panchayats, which was inherent to Congress Party’s own manifesto and a legacy of Rajiv Gandhi.
Exuding full confidence on the outcome of the local body elections, Dr Jitendra Singh said, Basohli will certainly have a Municipal Committee led by BJP and headed by a BJP elected Chairman. He said, the large number of candidates contesting against BJP, is itself an indication that both the common masses as well as the election aspirants look up to BJP as the only formidable Party in the election fray, whereas there are very few opponents for an election mandate from Congress and other Parties.
Dr Jitendra Singh called upon the Party candidates to enter into the election fray with full vigour and said, some of the disgruntled political elements have put up proxy candidates in a bid to cut upon the BJP vote bank, but, predicted that the election results on 20th October will be able to show them their own worth and their own poor following among the common voters who are mostly youth and do not get easily swayed.
As far as Basohli is concerned, Dr Jitendra Singh said, the BJP party candidates and their campaigners should raise the question as to why, even though there have been powerful leaders and even Ministers from here in the past, but still why in the last 65 years, nobody thought of moving a proposal to get Basohli recognized as a “Heritage Town”? Even though the Basohli art, painting and textile are appreciated the world over, what have these representatives in the past done to promote the local artisans, he asked.
Dr Jitendra Singh called upon the candidates to go from door to door, meet each and every voter and make best use of the mobile phone calls as well as social media to explain to the people the various pro-poor programmes launched by the Modi Government and identify the beneficiaries of these programmes in each of the 13 Wards of the local Municipal Committee.
Narayan Dutt Tripathi, Gopal Mahajan and Inderjit Sharma were among the local BJP leaders present on the occasion.
