Congress trying to politicise Assam Indian Citizenship issue: Dr Jitendra

Excelsior Correspondent
NEW DELHI, July 30: Union Minister for Northeast, Dr Jitendra Singh has accused Congress party of trying to politicise the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue, even as the Modi Government is trying to clear the mess created by the erstwhile Congress Governments.
Responding to media queries outside the Parliament today, Dr Jitendra Singh said, one fails to understand the logic or rationale behind the panic created by the opposition, when the whole world knows that the exercise to prepare the NRC was carried out under the supervision of the Supreme Court and it was initiated during the UPA-I regime. The question, therefore, is, where does the Modi Government become answerable and for what?
Brushing aside the opposition’s criticism, Dr Jitendra Singh said, what the Congress and its allies are saying is devoid of any conviction. They must first clarify as to where does the role of Modi Government come in, when the exercise began under UPA rule and was monitored by the Supreme Court. On the other hand, he said, the Modi Government has walked an extra mile to ensure that the NRC list is prepared in all its fairness and does justice to all.
Lashing out at the Congress party, Dr Jitendra Singh said, the Congress is desperate and frustrated because it has been totally washed out of the North Eastern region of India and barring Mizoram, Congress has been voted out in all the other seven States. The Congress, therefore, wants to create a law and order disturbance in the vain hope of destabilizing the popularly elected governments in these States, he said.
Responding to Mamata Banerjee’s allegation that 40 lakh of her voters had been deliberately left out of the NRC list, Dr Jitendra Singh retorted saying, if Mamata Banerjee is convinced that these are legitimate claims, why does she not produce their documents and get them included in the NRC list, which is yet to be finalized. The truth, however is, he said, that the TMC, like Congress, is desperate to create a political issue even when there exists none.
