Congressman appalled by reports of release of Malala attackers

WASHINGTON, June 6: Appalled by release of 8 of the 10 men jailed for shooting Malala Yousafzai, an influential American lawmaker has said that it sends a chilling message to Pakistani girls that their government will not protect them.
“I am appalled by reports that eight of the 10 militants convicted in the 2012 attack against Malala Yousafzai have been secretly released from prison,” said Congressman Ed Royce, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
“For all Pakistani girls who dream of pursuing an education, this sends the chilling message that their government will not protect them,” Royce said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the State Department has said it is seeking more information from the Pakistani Government on this.
“We have seen them, and we’re trying to get some more information. It appeared it may have happened some time ago, or a few weeks ago at least. We’re trying to get a little more information on this, and we’ll have probably more to say when we do,” State Department Spokesperson Marie Harf said.
“Obviously, we absolutely want those responsible to be brought to justice. We also have repeatedly called on Pakistan to ensure due process in general on this case and others, but we just don’t have much more on this specifically,” Harf said. (PTI)
