The decision of the Government to appoint 2000 teachers on contract basis does not bode good for Education Department. Contractualism has done more harm to the department than good. By appointing teachers on contract basis, the department expects to meet the shortage of teachers in schools across the State. But this short term measure is no way a panacea to the problems facing the department. The Government must appoint teachers on permanent basis by expediting the recruitment process undertaken by SSB, the organisation responsible for making appointments in the State.
Adhocism has in no way served the interest of any department. People appointed on contract usually remain uncertain of their future. They usually enter the department with the hope that they will be made permanent over a period of time. But most of the time that does not happen. Feeling insecure, may often leave the department at a time of their own convenience. During their service period they are not much accountable. This half hearted approach on the part of contractual teachers/lecturers affects the working of the department. The Government should make appointments on fast track basis and give nod to promotion as well.
