Controlling vehicular pollution

A major source of air pollution in crowded cities is the smoke emitted by the vehicles that do not observe the rules of control of vehicular emissions. The Supreme Court has issued orders that no renewal of licenses to the vehicles should be done unless they produce Pollution Under Control certificate from the concerned department.
The Supreme Court was considering a PIL in this connection. The court has observed that fuel refilling outlets in the National Capital Region (NCR) did not have the PUC centres. According to the instructions of the court, these centres will have the PUC centres because it is essential to control pollution of the air. Essentially it is the task of the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) to strengthening inspection of PUC centres for quality control and to introduce well-equipped mobile test centres and a programme to check visibly polluting vehicles. It should be possible to have mobile centres to bring about foolproof pollution control mechanism. We believe that the State Government will also go in for implementation of the Supreme Court in this connection because our two capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar are also among the most polluted cities.
