Srinagar, Aug 24: A police man of the Special Operation Group (SOG) was arrested today for allegedly passing lewd comments on a girl triggering violent protests in Murran Chowk in South Kashmir district of Pulwama in which seven people, including a police officer were injured.
A woman was passing near the Jammu and Kashmir Bank in the area when SOG man allegedly passed lewd comments on her. The incident was spotted by the bystanders, who protested against the misbehavior by the cop.
The traders suspended their business activities to protest against the incident. Protesters pelted stones at the SOG men against the incident. The cops charged batons and fired tear smoke shells to chase away protesters.
Police fired several rounds in air to scare away the protesters. However, the protesters remained defiant and continued stone pelting on police.
Four protesters and three cops including Additional Superintendent of Police were injured in the clashes.
Later, the accused cop identified as Baber Mohidin Dar has been arrested and placed under suspension by the higher authorities.
“A case under FIR 261/2015 u/s 294 was registered against the cop and further investigations have been taken up in this regard”, the official added.
