Cop injured in firing at Kathua

KATHUA, June 29: In a bizarre incident, a cop was fired upon by two unidentified car borne youth from Punjab at Shaheedi Chowk here this morning resulting into critical injuries to him.
He has been identified as Selection Grade Constable, Jagdish Singh of JKP.
The cop was on surveillance duty in the Kathua town and this morning when he saw a swift car entering the town via Nagri bridge, he suspected the movement of the car inmates and chased it. After reaching near Shaheedi Chowk, the two youth alighted from the car and entered into heated arguments with cop who tried to take them to Police Station Kathua.
As the cop tried to drag the youth to Police Station one of them took his revolver and fired upon him injuring him seriously. Not caring for himself, the cop still tried to snatch the key of the car. Though the two youth over powered him and succeeded in taking the key back but it was damaged by the cop with the result the youth could not drive the car. Fearing trouble they abandoned the car there and snatched a motor cycle bearing number JK02P6720 of a laborer by overpowering him on gun point and fled.
The cop was taken to District Hospital Kathua in an unconscious condition where he was operated upon and bullet was removed from his body. Later, the cop was referred to GMC Hospital Jammu in a critical condition for specialized treatment.
His condition is stated to be serious when last reports came in.
The Kathua police has launched a manhunt to trace the car borne youth whom police suspected to be smugglers having links with criminals also. The police has seized the car and recovered a box of 25 banned injections from it.
The Kathua Police has registered a case under Section 307 CRPC, Section 3/25 Armed Act and allied offences.
DySP Headquarters Ajay Sharma told Excelsior that Kathua Police has sent three police teams to Punjab to nab the youth. He said the police has made contact with SSPs of Pathankot and Gurdaspur also and the police is hopeful to nab the culprits soon.
He said the number of the car was also fake. The Police teams which have been send to Punjab have started investigation.
Meanwhile, the incident has generated a lot of public resentment and people said that the police is taking the increasing acts of criminals lightly. They said that Kathua which is linked with Punjab from two three places but there is no proper patrolling of police on these routes to check the acts of criminals and smugglers.
People alleged that there is no naka of police to check the frequent movement of criminals from Punjab who are also involved in smuggling of drugs.
