Srinagar, June 21: Panic gripped Lal Chowk this afternoon after police assisted by the para-military Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) cordoned off city centre and conducted frisking of the commuters and passersby.
Police and CRPF cordoned off Lal Chowk area at around 3 p.m and conducted searches of the vehicels and firsked the commuters and pedestrians.
The commuters and pedestrians were stopped by the police and CRPF and aksed to prove thier identity. People were lined up in queues for frisking.
The police operation led to massive traffic jam in the city centre after the Friday prayers. This is for the first time after over a year that police launched an operation in the city centre.
The operation was lauched ahead of the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit to Kashmir and begining of annual Amarnath yatra.
A police official said here that the surpise cordon and frisking was done as a precautionary measure.
