Fate of Omar, Karra among 517 candidates to be decided

SRINAGAR, Oct 7: With multi-tier security in place, counting of votes for 47 Assembly seat of Kashmir will start tomorrow morning at 10 district headquarters across the Valley to decide the fate of 517 candidates including those of former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hamid Karra.

There are 155 candidates in fray in Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam districts of South Kashmir whose fate was sealed on Sept 18. These Assembly seats are Pampore, Tral, Pulwama, Rajpora, Zainapora, Shopian, DH Pora, Kulgam, Devsar, Dooru, Kokernag (ST), Anantnag West, Anantnag, Srigufwara-Bijbehara, Shangus-Anantnag East and Pahalgam.
The prominent candidates in fray in South Kashmir whose fate with be decided tomorrow are CPI (M)’s Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, National Conference’s Sakina Itoo, and PDP’s Sartaj Madni, Abdul Rehman Veeri, Iltija Mufti and Waheed Para.

The fate of 160 candidates in Central Kashmir in Assembly constituencies of 17-Kangan (ST); 18-Ganderbal; 19-Hazratbal; 20-Khanyar; 21-Habbakadal; 22-Lal Chowk; 23-Channapora; 24-Zadibal; 25-Eidgah; 26-Central Shalteng; 27-Budgam; 28-Beerwah; 29-Khansahib; 30-Chrar-I-Sharief and 31-Chadoora across three districts of Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal had been sealed on September 18 and will also be decided tomorrow.
The prominent contestants in these constituencies are National Conference vice president, Omar Abdullah who is contesting from Ganderbal and Budgam constituencies, NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar, former Finance Minister and NC leader Abdul Rahim Rather, former Speaker and NC leader Mubarak Gul, former PDP Ministers Aasia Naqash and Ghulam Nabi Hanjoora, Apni Party chief Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, former Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yasin and jailed separatist leader Sarjan Ahmad Wagay (Barkati) who is contesting from two constituencies of Ganderbal and Beerwah.
The fate of 202 candidates in 16 Assembly constituencies of Sopore, Rafiabad, Uri, Baramulla, Wagoora-Kreeri, Gulmarg, Pattan, Karnah, Tregam, Kupwara, Lolab, Handwara, Langate, Bandipora, Sonawari and Gurez in Baramulla, Kupwara and Ganderbal districts was sealed on Oct 1 and it will be decided tomorrow.
The prominent contestants in these constituencies are former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beg, former Minister Taj Mohidin, former Minister and chief of Peoples Conference Sajjad Lone, former Minister and Apni Party leader Ghulam Hassan Mir, former Minister and PDP leader Syed Basharat Bukhari, former Minister and PC leader Imran Ansari, former Minister and NC leader Choudhary Ramzan and former MP and PDP leader Fayaz Ahmad Mir.
An official said a robust security system has been established to protect the counting process, and the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be transported to counting centres following ECI guidelines.
“To maintain law and order, Section 144 will be enforced outside the counting centres. Candidates will also have access to live streaming to monitor activities within the centres, ensuring transparency,” he added.
