RAJOURI, Oct 17: A villager and his wife were murdered by slitting their throat with some sharp-edged weapon in a Dhok by some `unknown people’, on the higher reaches of Kotranka (Kandi) in district Rajouri last night.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Azam (55 yrs), son of Mohd Khan and his wife Gulzar Begum (50), residents of Kandi. Both husband and wife had gone to their Dhok on the higher reaches of Kandi area along with their cattle for grazing and were staying there for the last several weeks.
During the day today, the dead bodies of the couple were noticed by some people while passing that area. They were going towards their Dhoks in the nearby area on Pir Panjal. They informed their family members and elder brother Ayub Pehalwan, an ex-serviceman at Kandi (Kotranka).
While the dead body of husband was lying in the rain outside the Dhok, the body of wife was inside the Dhok. Their throats had been slit and pool of blood was lying nearby. Some of their belongings were also found missing.
The police team led by SHO Kandi reached the spot and after thorough examination of the spot, the bodies were shifted to Kotranka hospital for postmortem.
The family members, relatives and residents of the area held protest near hospital against the double murder and demanded fair investigation into the matter. They also demanded constitution of SIT in this matter. After postmortem, the bodies were handed over to the family for last rites in the evening.
Additional SP Rajouri, Vivek Shekhar and DySP Hqrs also visited Kandi and spoke to the family. ASP assured fair investigation into the case. Later, DC Rajouri and SSP also visited Kotranka and assured to frame SIT to probe the matter.
DIG, Rajouri-Poonch Range, Dr Haseeb Mughal said that it will be premature to connect this incident with militancy. It appeared to be murder, however, the police is working on all the angles.
One of the members of the deceased family, Mushtaq said that earlier, his brother Farooq who was in police and his one Bhabhi, were killed by militants about 14 years ago. About this incident, they are still unaware, how it happened, he added.
