JAMMU, May 12: Special Judge Anticorruption Jammu Ashok Kumar Koul today awarded 2 years imprisonment to Dwarika Nath, the then Incharge Police Post, Government Medical College Jammu, who was caught red-handed by the Vigilance Organization while demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 3000 for allowing parking business in the hospital premises.
After hearing CPO Harminder Singh for the Vigilance Organization whereas Senior Advocate PN Raina for the accused person, court observed, “accused has been convicted on the charges of having abused his official position by receiving illegal gratification from the complainant”.
“The menace of corruption is the biggest hurdle in the development of the country. It is true that we talk about curbing the corruption at all levels but it is yet to happen and as the things are going on it appears to be a distant dream, Special Judge Anticorruption said, adding “what I personally believe is that at least deterrence is required in so far as corrupt elements are concerned because true justice is only possible when there is an equal harassment under law”.
“One cannot expect the results over night but something needs to be done urgently so that a common man feels some respite. On one hand the society reposes a trust in the police force in respect of safety of their life and property but at the same time we find such instances which bring a bad name to the entire institution”, the court said, adding “at least one cannot expect a police officer who was incharge of a police post to abuse the entrusted power for his gain”.
“The day may not be too far, if the corruption in our society goes at the pace it is going on now, when the society will be left with no option but to revolt against the corrupt system”, the court said while awarded simple imprisonment of two years and fine of Rs 5000 to the convict.
