Court awards 20 yrs RI to 2 narco smugglers

JAMMU, Mar 16: Principal Sessions Judge Ramban, Mohd Akram Chowdhary today awarded 20 years Rigorous Imprisonment and fine of Rs 2 lakh each to Ghulam Mohd Bhat, son of Haji Mohd Ismaiel of Baramulla and Feroz, son of Jamil Ahmad Ansari of Mumbai, who were arrested along with 8 kilograms of cannabis on April 23, 2009 by Batote Police.
After hearing Public Prosecutor GN Manhas for the State whereas Advocate Pawan Jandial for the accused persons, Principal Sessions Judge observed, “convicts seem to be first offenders as nothing has been pleaded adverse against them in this regard.  The accused No 1 appears in the age of more than 60 years and the accused No 2 also seems in the middle of his age”.
“Keeping in view all the facts and circumstances of the case and the status of the convicts this Court is of the considered opinion that without taking any lenient view it will be in the interest of justice to award the maximum sentence”, Principal Sessions Judge said.
Accordingly, both the accused were awarded 20 years Rigorous Imprisonment and fine of Rs two lakh each.  The period of detention already undergone by the convicts during the investigation and trial of this case will be set off against the substantive sentence of punishment.
