Srinagar shows decline in cases, deaths: DC

Srinagar, May 28: Kashmir reported a spike in COVID-19 deaths today as 26 people succumbed to the virus while 1,794 people tested positive for Corona taking the Jammu and Kashmir death toll to 3795.
Those who died include a COVID warrior and a 12-year old physically challenged girl. The frontline COVID warrior, an Asha worker Khalida Begum, who was posted at PHC in Block Sheeri of district Baramulla. She got infected and was battling for life and succumbed today to virus infection. The minor girl also died in Baramulla.
Others who succumbed to virus today include a 55-year-old man from Baramulla, a 75-year-old man from HMT Srinagar, a 55-year-old woman from Fateh Kadal Srinagar, a 55-year-old man from Khudpore Budgam, a 65-year-old man from Bemina Srinagar, a 66-year-old man from Tarathpora Villgam Kupwara, a 61-year-old man from Bemina, a man from Sarnal in Anantnag, a woman from Akad in Anantnag, a man from Matipora in Anantnag and another man from Khanabal in Anantnag. Those who tested positive include 382 from Srinagar, 204 from Baramulla, 223 from Budgam, 179 from Pulwama, 228 from Kupwara, 207 from Anantnag, 57 from Bandipora, 168 from Ganderbal, 94 from Kulgam and 52 from Shopian.
As per officials figures, 64,207 positive cases including 760 deaths and 58,086 recoveries are from Srinagar, 20,899 including 255 deaths and 17,528 recoveries are from Baramulla, 19,776 including 16,603 recoveries and 175 deaths are from Budgam, 12,679 including 10,266 recoveries and 163 deaths are from Pulwama, 11,576 including 139 deaths and 9,488 recoveries are from Kupwara, 14,127 including 9,944 recoveries and 161 deaths are from Anantnag, 8,266 cases including 7,191 and 87 deaths are from Bandipora, 8,456 including 7,079 recoveries and 67 deaths are from Ganderbal, 9,625 including 7,477 recoveries and 96 deaths are from Kulgam and 5,217 including 3,987 recoveries and 54 deaths are from Shopian.
The number of cases in Kashmir division has reached 174,846 including 147,649 recoveries and 1,957 deaths.
The number of active cases in Jammu and Kashmir are 41,382 including 25,240 from Kashmir division.
With 3,637 more recoveries, the tally of total recoveries in Jammu and Kashmir has reached to 239,254 which is 84.11 percent of the total cases.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad today said that the Srinagar district has shown a significant decline in COVID-19 positive cases and hospital admissions in the last few days.
He said that the positivity rate of COVID cases has declined from 36 percent in mid of May to 8.7 percent on 27 May, while recovery rate of the district has picked up at 83 percent. He said there are about 5800 active cases in the district.
The DC said that due to relentless testing and vaccination drives across the district there was an overall reduction in COVID cases. However, there is need to be extra cautious by strictly adhering to Covid-19 appropriate behavior at all levels.
He said that a population of over 2.80 lakh of target groups have been administered Covid vaccine doses in the district till date. He said vaccination centers have been established across the City to cover the rest of the targeted population.
He said that Covid care centres have been set up at all 21 Panchayats of the district with all medical equipment, oximeters, besides medical and Paramedical staff to manage and contain the Covid-19 effectively in rural areas.
In the meantime, Corona curfew continued in Kashmir today with all the major shrines and Masjids continued to be shut for mandatory Friday prayers. Government imposed Corona curfew in Kashmir a month ago and extended it to May 31.
All the major shrines and Masjids including Jamia Masjid, Hazratbal shrine, Khankah Moallah and others remained closed for the mandatory Friday prayers today. No Friday prayers were held at the shrines and Masjids falling under the jurisdiction of Wakf Board were held today.
Police and paramilitary troops were deployed in large numbers across Srinagar and other major districts of Kashmir to enforce the lockdown restrictions. The barricades and concertina wires were erected at many places to prevent the public movement.
All the shops and business establishments barring emergency services remained closed throughout the day in Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir.
Police arrested 190 persons, lodged 92 FIRs and also realized fine to the tune of Rs 1,22,920 from 964 people for violating the guidelines in Kashmir today.
“The special drive against the violators of COVID-19 guidelines and rules continued throughout all the districts of Kashmir Valley to ensure that people adhere to SOPs and guidelines envisaged by the government to curb COVID-19 pandemic,” police said.
