Credit for Food Security Act goes to UPA Govt: Soz

JAMMU, Dec 15: Former Union Minister and former PCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz has claimed that credit for the Food Security Act goes to the UPA-II Government.
In a press statement issued here today Prof Soz said, “The credit for Food Security Act goes to UPA-II and it has brought great relief to the needy sections of society throughout India.”
He said the adoption of this Act in the J&K State is a welcome measure. The
States’ Minister for Food & Consumer Affairs has, however, to ensure that no section of the targeted group is left out of this, essentially, pro-poor measure, former PCC leader said.
Prof Soz further said that the public distribution system has to be rejuvenated as it needs quite a lot of improvement. The rejuvenation of the public distribution system must be within the public knowledge so that people feel convinced that something substantial is being done for their welfare. Already, mistakes have been noticed in the CAPD system. If the public distribution system continues as it is at the moment, the well-intentioned scheme may suffer set-back in its implementation.
“The other important thing is that the Government should initiate a vigorous public awareness programme so that the people remain alert about proper implementation of the Law. The Govt also needs to warn the implementing agencies that no mal-practices and corruption would be tolerated and defaulters would be severely punished. The minister concerned has done some explanation of the scheme, but he needs to launch a vigorous effort to reach every section of the society, rather effectively,” former PCC chief added.
