Crimes against women on rise

While hearing a PIL case in which a minor girl is reported to have been slapped by a police cop in Delhi, the Divisional Bench of the Supreme Court expressed surprise on the rise of violence and crime against women in Delhi. It has rightly pointed out that ten years ago, crime against women in Delhi was not that high as it is now. Particularly in last five years the security situation of women in Delhi has deteriorated. Obviously this is a reflection on the administration and security bandobast of the capital city. We have also had several reports of rape and violence against foreign female tourists to our country. This is a sad and shameful state of affairs. Our country has become notorious for this particular crime and one can say with certainty that lack of accountability is the main cause of escalation of the crime. A clear proof of failure of administration to curb the disease is that more and more people are coming out on streets to protest against recurring rapes and maltreatment of women. If the situation continues, the people might as well think of taking law into their hands and punishing the culprit in society courts rather than wait for the administrative machinery to move if it moves at all. That would be a situation analogous to anarchy but should never be allowed to happen.
The Divisional Bench’s observation that earlier to Nirbhay rape case in the running bus, there have been such instances in the country but these were not reported either for fear of shame or reprisal because the police have been found inactive or usually partisan in such cases. The women still suffer because many cases are not at all brought to the notice of the police who may or may not file and FIR. This is a very sad state of affairs and just passing laws one after another cannot help. A practical solution to the problem must be found failing which we will be branded as a country of a people low in morals and unable to protect its womenfolk.
