SRINAGAR, Sept 26: Militants this evening shot dead a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in Srinagar and security forces busted a Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant module, that was planning to carry out a major strike in the area while Police arrested a Special Police Officer (SPO) who had gone missing from a Special Operations Group (SOG) camp Sopore last month.
Police said that militants shot dead a CRPF man at Alikadal area of Srinagar this evening. He said that one CRPF personnel who was performing duty at Alikadal in downtown city this evening was shot at from point blank range.
The jawan, posted with 44th Battalion of the CRPF, was critically injured and was rushed to a hospital for treatment. However, he was declared brought dead at SKIMS hospital. Search operations have been launched to nab the militants.
This is the second militant attack in the city since Sunday. Militants shot dead a ruling National Conference worker in Nowhatta area of the city on September 21.
No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
A police officer told Excelsior that a militant turned SPO who had gone missing along with his service rifle form SOG camp in Sopore last month was arrested by police.
The officer said that SPO Mohammad Shafi Dar son of Mohammad Maqbool Dar of Nowpora Sopore was arrested by Sopore and Handwara police in a joint operation from village Kralgund in Handwara. He said that initial investigations revealed that he had some promotion issue and had run away from the camp.
Dar was a militant turned SPO and has been promoted as follower but a case was pending against him and the orders were not issued yet which led him to take this extreme step of fleeing from SOG camp.
A police officer said here that Army and police in a joint operation today busted a militant mode and arrested its four members. He said that initial investigations have revealed that the apprehended militants were planning to carry out a major militant strike in North Kashmir.
The Officer said that Sopore Police and 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army today busted a militant module of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) operating in Sopore town. “Four militants were arrested and arms and ammunition was recovered from them”, he said.
The officer said that acting on a tip off a search operation was launched by Police and Army in Batpora area of Sopore town today. “During the search operation four militants of HM identified as Yawer Muzafar Bhat alias Yawar Tanga alias Muz Tanga resident of Mumkak Batpora Sopore, Shoib-ul-Hamid alias Shoib Peetal resident Batpora Sopore, Ansar Bin Altaf alias Ansar Dar resident of Batpora Sopore and Riyaz Ahmad Dar resident of Naseer Abad Sopore were apprehended.
“Two pistols, two pistol magazines, 14 pistol rounds, two Chinese hand grenades were recovered from them”, the police officer said.
Police registered a case (FIR number 156/14 under Section 7/25 Arms Act, 3/5 Exp. Sub. Act) against them and investigation are being conducted.
