Srinagar, Nov 29: After brisk polling in the first phase of polling following violence free campaign, militants today hurled at grenade at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployment at Palladium Cinema injuring eight persons including a CRPF officer.
The grenade attack came at a time when second phase of polling is on December 2 in North and South Kashmir. Soon after the attack, security across Kashmir has been put on high alert.
Militants this afternoon hurled a grenade towards CRPF bunker located at Palladium Cinema, Lal Chowk injuring eight persons including a child and a Sub Inspector of CRPF.
The explosion caused panic in the city centre with the people running for cover. Police and CRPF immediately cordon off the area and senior security officials also reached the spot to assess the situation.
Police identified the injured as Halima wife of Abdul Rashid resident of Chaki-Kawosa, Abdul Rehman Wani son of Abdul Khaliq resident of Chaki-Kawosa, Budgam,Bashir Ahmad Mir son of Ghulam Ahmad resident of Bemina, Ghulam Nabi Nayak son of Ghulam Nabi and his eight years old son Farooq Ahmad resident of Devsar,Kulgam, Abdul Majeed son of Ghulam Hyder resident of Natipora, Mushtaq Ahmad resident of Shivpora and a Sub Inspector of 132 BN CRPF Hari Ram Devakar.
No militant outfit claimed the responsibility of the blasts.
Security forces were put on high alert across Kashmir especially in Srinagar and its adjoining areas to foil any militant attempts to disrupt the polls.
Police and CRPF has erected barricades at several places across Srinagar and its outskirts and are checking the vehicles.
Security alert has been declared as campaigning is on for second, third and fourth phase across Kashmir, except for Ganderbal and Bandipora districts where voting took place on November 25.
