Cultural prog, craft mela attractions of Baisakhi Festival: Div Com

JAMMU, Apr 11: The Directorate of Tourism Jammu in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (Bhopal), an institution under Ministry of Culture, Government of India  is organizing five-day Baisakhi Festival from April 12-16, 2014 at Mubarak Mandi, Raghunath Bazar, Rajinder Bazar and Veer Marg.
This information was given by Divisional Commissioner Jammu Shantmanu at a press conference held here today.
The inaugural ceremony will take place at Kanak Mandi at 11 am followed by Jhanki, Kud Dance and other cultural events by cultural troops.
Tanga ride, special exhibition on heritage at Mubarak Mandi, ethnic food stalls are major attractions of the event besides Wrestling competition, Arti at Jia Potha Ghat in Akhnoor, Golf Tournament at Sidhra Golf Course are other events of the Baisakhi Festival.  Renowned singers Radhika Chopra and Taniya Gupta would also perform on April 16, the Divisional Commissioner informed.
Another attractive programme of the event is craft mela in which folk and tribal artists from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Gujarat, Assam, Manipur and J&K will demonstrate and sale their traditional craft products.
In addition to this, cultural programmes would be organized by artists within and outside the state at Mubarak Mandi from April 13 to 16 from 7.30 onwards.
On the occasion, there will be 30 percent discount from Hotel Association besides Kanak Mandi, Vir Marg Traders would sell all items on wholesale rates with attractive prizes.
The entry will be free for public on all days of this mega festival.
The Baisakhi Festival would also be celebrated at Dera Baba Banda, Reasi.
District Administration in collaboration with the Gurudwara Committee has made elaborate arrangements for the festival.
The premises of the Gurudwara have the samadhi of Banda Bahadur, the favorite Jathedar of Shri Guru Gobind Singh. Besides having ashes of Banda Bahadur, the shrine also has an arrow, a huge sword and some weapons given to Banda by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
District Administration has ensured facilities like drinking water, proper cleaning of the site besides first aid camp by Health Department, uninterrupted power supply during the Mela days. Likewise, Police Department would ensure adequate security arrangements at mela site and the entire surrounding is given a festive look.
