Cultural Programme at Purmandal

Sir,
Please refer the news item “SMDA Starts Sunday Series of Cultural Programmes” DE Oct 30 wherein the Surinsar Mansar Tourism Development Authority (SMDA) in collaboration with Department of Information is stated to have started Sunday series of Cultural programmes at picturesque lake destination of Mansar.
Having all appreciations, I would like to make the SMDA understand that the religious tourist spots of Purmandal and Utterbahini also form part of their jurisdiction but unfortunately the said activities have never been conducted at these places as per the history in the past.
These destinations particularly Purmandal in the past has remained a hub of cultural activities on the eve of fairs and festivals like Maha Shivratri and Chet Choudish etc. Here at Purmandal the “Singing of Bhaks, Fluit recital, Luddi dance, Jagratas, Kathas, Karaks, Bars, Qissas, Kahanies and Raas Leela etc. on the one part and the exhibition of products manufactured by local artisans like Hal, Panjali, Masadh, Chakla Belna, Phoories, Binnas, Bamboo basket, and earthen wares on the other were the main attractions of these fairs.
Because of apathetic attitude of the authorities these activities have now become a dream of the past. Major reason behind it is the non availability of night shelter accommodation. The infrastructure available i.e. two Sarais (Havalies of Maharaja Suchet Singh and Dhian Singh) taken over by SMDA from PWD about a decade back on the pretext of converting the same into budgeted accommodation stand reduced to ruins for the reasons best known.
While concluding I would like to request the SMDA to please divert their focus of attention towards these shrines and ensure holding of such programmes at Purmandal also in line with Mansar. Further the DPRs prepared for the repairs and renovation of the said Sarais about 2-3 years back be translated into reality, besides ensuring special protection to the womenfolk being regular visitors, against discourtesy, hooliganism and other forms of misconduct by creating special infrastructure like change rooms, bath rooms and breastfeeding rooms etc.
Jawahar Lal Baru,
Purmandal
