Curfew to continue in parts of Srinagar

SRINAGAR, Dec 2: The curfew in the parts of Srinagar that was re-imposed last night will continue tomorrow even as there were no fresh clashes today.
An official spokesman said here that curfew will continue in Zadibal, Nowhatta and Urdu Bazar police stations of Srinagar city. Curfew was re-imposed in these areas last night after fresh sectarian clashes were reported from these areas after the curfew was lifted yesterday morning.
A police spokesman said here that the situation remained peaceful in Srinagar including the areas where curfew remained imposed. “No untoward incident was reported from any place. Moreover, the curfew will continue in areas of police station Zadibal and Nowhatta and police post Urdu Bazar tomorrow”, the spokesman added.
Curfew in Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Rainawari, Nigeen, Lal Bazaar, Zadibal and Parimpora police station areas of Srinagar was lifted yesterday after three days but was re-imposed in three police station areas after fresh clashes.
Curfew was imposed in 9 police station areas of Srinagar on Wednesday following sectarian clashes in Hawal and its adjoining areas of Srinagar city. Hawal, Gojwara and adjoining areas of old city have become flash points for sectarian violence over the past couple of years during Muharram processions.
Meanwhile, a meeting called by Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Omar Farooq at the residence of noted Shia leader Aga Syed Hassan at Budgam was attended by several religious and political leaders of both the sects including PDP leader and MLA Iftikhar Hussain Ansnari.
The leaders expressed concern over the sectarian clashes and called for unity among both the sects. A committee comprising the leaders of both the sects was formed that will visit the areas where the sectarian clashes took place and interact with the locals there to resolve the issues mutually.
The Hurriyat chairman has called another meeting of the leaders of the both the sects at Mirwaiz Manzil in Srinagar tomorrow to discuss the situation.
