JAMMU, Aug 13: Augmenting his campaign to sensitize the common populace about the incidence of cardiovascular diseases Dr. Sushil Sharma HoD Cardiology, GMC Jammu and his team today held a day long camp at Mahajan Hall in Akhnoor. Sensing the socio-economic background and after taking notice of the attendants personal history, Dr. Sushil made a statement of great magnitude viz., consuming major saturated fatty acids increases people’s risk of coronary heart diseases.
“Saturated fatty acids occur naturally in animal products like meats, eggs and dairy products as well as in some plant-based and vegetable oils such as coconut, palm and palm kernel oil. In addition, many baked goods and fried foods also contain high levels of saturated fats and trans fatty acids,” he said and urged the common populace to replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats, whole grain carbohydrates or plant proteins as way of people lowering their risk of heart disease.
Dr. Sushil asserted that most people in the semi-urban and rural areas eat too much saturated fat and oily products. “Research over the decades clearly indicated that saturated fats raise low density Lipo-protein cholesterol (LDL) in the blood.”
He added that every area of trouble gives out a ray of hope and it is quite promising when one has to deal with a risk factor which is modifiable in nature. Upto 80 per cent of early heart disease and stroke can be prevented by adopting healthy behaviours including a healthy diet. Besides switching from high saturated fat laden diet to low fat alternatives, this area needs the synergy of educationists, NGOs and civil society,” he informed.
