Cyber security measures in J&K

Sir,
In an era where digitalization has become the norm, it is disconcerting to note that a significant number of Government Departments have yet to conduct security audits of their websites and applications. The vulnerability of online platforms to potential cyberattacks cannot be overstated, and it is incumbent upon Government agencies to ensure the highest levels of security for their digital services. However, the laxity in conducting security audits, as reported, poses a grave risk of exploitation by malicious actors.
The Government has recognized the urgency of this matter and has issued a clear directive: unless security audits are completed within the next month, services will be suspended from the State Data Centre. Moreover, no further hosting of websites or applications will be allowed without the requisite “Safe to Host” certificate.
The Jammu and Kashmir e-Governance Agency (JAKeGA) has rightly emphasized the importance of security audits to identify and rectify vulnerabilities. Compliance with the Information Technology Act of 2008, which mandates such audits for eligibility to host services in the State Data Centre, is crucial for the safety of online assets.
It is indeed disheartening that, despite clear instructions issued over a year and a half ago, many departments have failed to comply with security audit requirements. At a time when the Government has made numerous services available online, this lack of attention to cyber security is deeply concerning.
JAKeGA’s insistence on timely audits, suggested improvements, and continuous monitoring of websites and applications is commendable. Additionally, the call for encrypted channels for external communications demonstrates a commitment to data security.
In conclusion, it is urged all Government departments to prioritize cybersecurity without delay. The safety of citizens’ data and the integrity of online services must remain paramount. It is imperative that the Government’s directives are followed diligently to ensure a secure digital environment for all residents of Jammu and Kashmir.
It is also important that the citizens also extend their cooperation to the Government to make this initiative successful.
