JAMMU, Oct 7: Daily rated and casual workers from various departments were cane-charged by police when they took out protest rally against the Government near Dogra Chowk here today.
A large number of daily wagers from PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, PDD, R&B, Health, Tourism, Agriculture and Forest departments assembled near Press Club in the morning and started protest demonstration. They raised loud slogans against the Government and also in support of their pending demands. They were demanding regularization and framing a definite policy for it. The agitating workers were also demanded release of their pending wages and enhancement in their daily wage rate.
Led by Tanveer Hussain from PHE, Akhil Sharma from PDD, Sikander Singh from Tourism, Anurag and Puneet Sharma from Health and Medical Education and Rajan Sharma from Agriculture department , the protesting daily wagers then took out a protest march towards the official residence of Dy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh on Canal Road near State Guest House.
As they hardly reached Dgra Chowk, a strong contingent of State police led by SHO Nawabad stopped them. The protesting workers shown some resistance and tried to break the police cordon. The police then resorted to cane charge on the protesting workers. The police managed to foil the protest march of the workers towards the residence of DyCM. Four workers received minor injuries during police lathi-charge. The workers then dispersed.
Earlier, Tanveer Hussain and Akhil Sharma while addressing workers alleged that Government has failed to honour its commitment. They said the workers have not been paid their wages since long. Even on festivals, the Government did not release their wages. This is criminal act on the part of Government. They also alleged that regularization process has not been completed and no definite policy as promised by the Govt has been framed. They claimed that the workers would now further intensify their strike.
