SRINAGAR, Oct 25: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today strongly condemned an assault on a gynecologist medico at District Hospital Kupwara after an infant death.
In a statement here, the DAK president, Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan said that “this mad pattern of atrocities perpetrated on doctors time and again is unacceptable”. “On October 21, gynecologist of Kupwara hospital performed an elective cesarean section on a patient. The baby born was meconium drenched and after resuscitation was shifted in hospital ambulance to GB Pant hospital Srinagar where after 36 hours baby died,” he said.
The DAK president said on October 23, the attendants of the infant barged in the Kupwara hospital and broke the window panes of Operation Theater and thrashed the gynecologist mercilessly who got unconscious. “Patient was referred to Srinagar because there is no pediatrician available in the sole medical facility of the area. There are no pediatric care facilities available in the hospital and it is criminal to conduct deliveries in a hospital where pediatric care facilities are not available,” he said.
Dr Hassan said the baby died due to lack of neonatal care who could have been saved if pediatric care facilities were available in the hospital.
“This act of hooliganism has created fear among doctors which has adversely affected patient care,” the DAK president and demanded arrest of the accused.
He said that Government rather than concentrating pediatric care facilities in Srinagar for minuscule population should provide pediatric care to rural areas which form the majority of population and where infants are dying on daily basis due to lack of neonatal care.
