Heavy rains, hailstorms and inclement weather that continued longer than normal have extensively damaged standing crops in Jammu region. Farmers brought this situation to the notice of their elected representatives, who in turn, drew the attention of the Government to their suffering. It is encouraging that the Minister of Agriculture has conducted a tour of RS Pura where he, along with his high-level team, interacted with the farmers and others in the localities and patiently listened to their tale of suffering. The farmers must have felt happy that at least the Agricultural Minister did understand their plight owing to natural calamity. Obviously, the Minister will prepare a report and submit it to the Chief Minster for necessary action. There are no two opinions about the damages done to standing crops. Revenue officials are conducting survey of damaged crops. They will submit the report to higher authorities.
We appreciate that the Agriculture Minister is seized of the problem. However, we emphasize that whatever is the quantum of relief it should come to the affected farmers without loss of time so that they are able to proceed with their agrarian activities uninterruptedly. We must remember that farmers cannot afford to go on lamenting on damaged crops indefinitely. They have to gird up their loins and return to the task of cultivating the fields and growing of new crops. It is the responsibility of the Agriculture Department to see that no soul goes to sleep with empty stomach. The relief must come to the affected farmers most urgently.
