Date for filing IT returns extended

JAMMU, July 31: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing of returns of income for the assessment year 2012-13 to August 31, 2012 in respect of assessees who were liable to file such returns by today.
According to an official handout issued by Income Tax Department, the assessees turned up in large numbers in various Income Tax Offices of the State today to file their returns of income.
The Income Tax Department had made elaborate arrangements for receiving the returns beyond the normal office hours—up to 9 pm. However, in the late afternoon an order was received from CBDT under Section 119 of the Income Tax Act, 1961 whereby due date for filing of returns of income for the assessment year 2012-13 has been extended.
The extension of date for filing of income tax returns has come as big relief to the tax- payers, who had been waiting in long queues before the return receipt counters of the department.
In view of the extended date, A K Thatai, Commissioner of Income Tax, J&K has appealed to all the liable assessees to file their returns before August 31, 2012.
